Accountancy Europe changed its name from the Federation of European Accountants (Fédération des Experts-comptables Européens, FEE) at our 30th anniversary celebration (7 December 2016). The Federation was formed on 1 January 1987 as the merger of two bodies: the Union Européenne des Experts-comptables Economique et Financiers (UEC) and the Groupe d’Etudes des Experts-comptables de la CEE.

In its early days the Federation’s work was clearly divided between two committees, one focussing on coordination and the second with the competences to discuss EU Directives. We successfully organised several general and specialised conferences across Europe at an early stage. High-level speakers attracted participants and solidified the organisation’s reputation. Under the direction of the Secretary General, we gradually expanded our team to support the growing activities of working parties and governing bodies. We covered a wide scope of topics affecting the accountancy profession, such as SME and SMP issues, corporate governance, oversight and quality assurance, and sustainability reporting and assurance on sustainability. We also contributed to several key European initiatives, namely, the Green Paper on statutory auditors in the EU, projects on direct taxation and VAT, the introduction of the Euro, the EU Regulation on International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and the new Directive on statutory audit.

We have gradually enlarged our membership, uniting professional accountancy bodies across. For more information on our history, please visit the links below.
